Jeylu Gutierrez
District Director, Cook County Board of Commissioners
Jeylu B. Gutierrez is the District Director for Cook County Commissioner Alma E. Anaya serves the 7th district of Cook County which includes the communities of Little Village, Back of the Yards, Pilsen, Archer Heights, Brighton Park, Gage Park, McKinley Park and parts Chicago Lawn, LeClaire-Hearst, University Village, Vittum Park, and West Elsdon. She is a passionate leader and advocate for the Latino and immigrant community.
Jeylu was born and raised in Guadalajara, Mexico and migrated to the United States in 2007. Jeylu received her Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations at Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, Associates Degree at the Universidad del Valle de Mexico in Guadalajara, and Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality Management at Kendall College in Chicago. In 2011, she settled in the Brighton Park community in the southwest side of Chicago where she continues to reside with her husband and their two beautiful daughters.
Prior to working in government, Jeylu served as a Community Liaison, Student Advocate & Assistant Counselor for Chicago Public Schools (CPS). In those roles, she applied herself to building relationships with community organizations, connecting families to vital services, scholarships, and after-school programs. She also assisted first generation students through the high school application process. Jeylu’s first interaction with Cook County government was in 2016 when she was appointed by then Commissioner Jesus “Chuy '' Garcia to serve as the Women's Issues Commissioner of the 7th district.
Jeylu has a passion for serving her neighbors and empowering her community. She volunteers for community initiatives and serves as a Board of Directors and Treasurer for U.N.I.O.N. Impact Center, a non-profit organization committed to finding community-driven solutions for violence in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, and serves at St. Bruno School’s Board where her older daughter attends Pre-K. Jeylu has been involved in political campaigns in Chicago as a volunteer across a range of congressional, state, county, and local races; also in Guadalajara where she served as the Sister Communities Director during the Governor’s race in Jalisco in 2005.
